Montgomery's Christmas Season Starts With an October Deadline

Most people think of Montgomery's holiday season as one Saturday in December, with a downtown parade and luminarias after dark. The City of Montgomery runs it on a longer schedule, and the first deadline is October 31. Registration for the Lone Star Christmas Parade and the Light Up the Park decorating contest both close that day. That's also the afternoon kids will be trick-or-treating downtown.

If you plan to watch, you have weeks to spare. If you want your business, church group, scout troop or family in the season itself, you have about nine days from the date this post goes up.

Halloween Closes Two Sign-Ups

The City's Downtown Business District Trick or Treat runs Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 6 p.m. Two holiday registrations close the same day.

Lone Star Christmas Parade Light Up the Park
Registration opened July 31 at $25 early rate September 3
Current rate $50 late registration, Oct. 1–31 Not listed
Closes Oct. 31, or sooner at 100 approved entries Oct. 31
Event day Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.–noon Saturday, Dec. 5, 6–8 p.m.

The parade cap is the detail most likely to catch people out. According to the City's parade registration notice, the limit is 100 approved entries. Once it fills, registration closes even if October 31 hasn't arrived. The notice links to the entry form and a map of the 2026 route. If your group is still debating a float at the next meeting, the parade may be full by the time you decide.

Light Up the Park runs on a longer timeline than one evening. The City's Light Up the Park notice lists four dates beyond registration:

  1. Decorating begins Monday, November 9.
  2. Judging begins around the turn of the month, at the end of November or on December 1.
  3. Winners are announced at the December 5 event.
  4. Decorations must come down by Monday, January 4, 2027.

So an entry stays up for roughly eight weeks. In earlier years, the City's version paired a holiday tree lighting with pole, residential and commercial decorating contests. The 2026 notice covers only the contest schedule, so check the registration form for this year's categories before you buy lights.

November Is When Downtown Gets Ready

Once the sign-ups close, November is the setup month, and it starts with downtown's busiest regular Saturday.

The City's November calendar lists the Lone Star 1st Saturday Market on November 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed that evening by the Lone Star Street Dance from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Slice of Amish presents the market, according to the City's listing. The market has grown well past a small craft table. When it fell on July 4 this year, Montgomery County News reported that organizer Debby Dykes and Rollis Johnson, owner of Slice of Amish on McCown Street, briefed City Council on a day planned for more than 60 vendors. In the same story, Johnson thanked McCoy's Building Supply for lending picnic tables, and the Rancher's Daughter and Liberty Antiques for offering extra parking. That kind of cooperation among downtown businesses is what makes a full Saturday work in a district this size.

Two days after the street dance, decorating opens for Light Up the Park. On a weekday evening, the recurring Sip N Stroll returns on Thursday, November 19, from 4 to 7 p.m., with another on Thursday, December 17. The City's October listing named Rustic Cashmere as presenter. Because it falls between the bigger weekends, it's the quietest way to see downtown as the windows go up.

There's also a new place for dinner this year. According to Community Impact, New Bridge Fusion Steakhouse opened October 9 at 759 Pine Market Ave. Restaurateur Jason Yu and Chef David Moore run it. The menu covers steak, seafood, burgers and salads, and the space includes a full bar, a social area with darts and an outdoor patio designed for live music. A spot like that works well after a Sip N Stroll or a long market day.

Two December Saturdays, Two Different Jobs

Saturday, December 5 belongs to residents. The market returns from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Light Up the Park runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The Montgomery County News events calendar lists it at Cedar Brake Park on Eva Street. This is when the decorating that started November 9 gets judged and winners are announced. If you entered in October, this is your night.

Saturday, December 12 is the big public day. According to the City's Christmas in Historic Montgomery notice, the City and the Montgomery Historical Society are planning the day together, but each event has its own organizer and registration. The Society's 2026 theme is "Lone Star Christmas," and the day runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Based on the Society's 2026 press release and the City's notice, the schedule looks like this:

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Holiday Marketplace Arts & Crafts Sale on the grounds around the Old Community Center, 14420 Liberty Street.
  • 10 a.m. to noon: Lone Star Christmas Parade, presented by the City.
  • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until sold out: The 36th Annual Cookie Walk inside the Old Community Center at Liberty and College Streets. Decorated cookies and candies sell for $10 per pound.
  • 4 to 7 p.m.: The 49th Annual Candlelight Home Tour. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students, and children four and under get in free.

Two details from the press release are worth planning around. The Cookie Walk ends when the cookies run out, so the 4 p.m. close is the latest it will run, not a promise. The Montgomery Monarchs Chapter of the National Charity League spends days decorating and staging it ahead of time. And for the Candlelight Tour, every home at Fernland Historical Park will be open, with luminarias lighting the walk between historic churches, homes and landmarks. Tickets and details are on the Montgomery Historical Society site.

That makes December 12 a full day. If you watch the parade at 10, buy cookies before they sell out and come back for the 4 p.m. tour, you'll be downtown for most of the day. The parade crowd usually turns into the marketplace crowd. If you'd rather avoid peak foot traffic, the Candlelight Tour hours are the time to come.

If you want live music afterward, B-52 Brewing's Saturday Concert Series lists shows on both December 5 and December 12.

Old Dates Are Still Online

The annual events page on the Visit Montgomery Texas tourism site still shows dates from earlier years. It lists Trick or Treat on October 26, Light Up the Park on Friday, December 6, and the Christmas Parade on December 13. In 2026 those events fall on October 31, Saturday, December 5, and Saturday, December 12. The page also lists a Snow Party after the parade, and that event isn't on the 2026 calendar so far.

For anything with a deadline, use the City of Montgomery's calendar and its newsflash pages. Those are where the registration links, entry caps and corrected 2026 dates are posted.

Our team has watched Montgomery's December traditions for a long time, and we love seeing downtown decorated for the Candlelight Tour. If you're new to the area this year and want help planning a December weekend around the parade, the Cookie Walk and the Fernland homes, Beth Ferester and Grace Petty are happy to share what we know. Book an appointment and we'll start with your calendar.
