Relocation Guide to The Woodlands, Texas

Welcome to The Woodlands, Texas – a place I call home and where I have enjoyed selling homes for over 40+ years. Throughout my many years of coordinating moves for employees of dozens of oil and other fortune 500 companies, I have struggled to find a concise, informative packet to pass on to families moving into our area. There are many online resources, but none that compile everything that a person considering moving to The Woodlands would want to know into one site – so we decided to create our own. As a certified relocation specialist and an expert on The Woodlands and its surrounding areas, I am very proud to present you with this detailed Relocation Guide. I hope you will find a lot of useful information in the following pages. We would love to take you on a personal tour of the area – if you are planning to be in the area, please do get in touch!

HISTORY OF THE WOODLANDS

One Man’s Vision

Learning the history of an area can play an important part in choosing a place to call home. The Woodlands has a history that starts with one man’s vision and ends in an unrivaled success story. The Woodlands was conceived by George P. Mitchell, a successful oil industry investor and owner of Mitchell Industries. In the early 1960’s, Mitchell attended a symposium on how to develop Title VII HUD-financed communities, like Columbia, Maryland. Mitchell was keen to put his new knowledge to work and, in 1964, he purchased a large piece of land from the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Company. Of that, 2800 acres was combined with more land that was purchased over the next ten years and 300 transactions, until eventually Mitchell had assembled the original 17,455 acres that would become The Woodlands.

Villages of The Woodlands

The Woodlands is divided into Villages, with each Village containing residential enclaves, as well as village centers which all offer a variety of grocery stores, restaurants, shops and recreational facilities. The map below specifies the different villages – the map is clickable and will take you to any village-specific websites that exist for more information.
